Examining Your Congressional Community
  -- find/examine a congressional community
  -- examine in context of corresponding congressional district

July 2024 .. You can have a voice on policy and rule-making by joining your Congressional Community (or CC). The interactive tools available in this section provide insights about your community in the context of your Congressional District (or CD). You can locate a Congressional Community (CC) based on an address or location using these tools:
  • interactive mapping tool to locate a CC based on an address or location.
  • interactive table to view, rank, compare, each/all CCs and/or CDs.

Mapping Congressional Communities & Congressional Districts

Locate a CD or CC code .. see it on a map .. examine its demographics
Click a box to view instructions.
Find a Congressional District (CD) based on an address/location (zooms to CD) .. in the legend panel at left, click on the layer name for "Cong District 118". It turns blue .. the active layer.
.. enter an address or location like "Laguna Beach" (no quotes, not case sensitive)
.. the map view zooms-in to the CD containing the location and shows the CD crosshatched.
.. view the demographic profile for this CD displayed in the lower left.
.. here you can examine many demographic subject matter items for that CD.
.. optionally click on other layers in the Legend Panel.

.. Try a different address or location, maybe the ZIP code "85258" or any address/location.
.. The view will zoom to that CD and show CCs.
Find a Congressional Community (CC) based on an address/location (zooms to CC)
.. in the legend panel at left, click on the layer name for "Cong Community Code". It turns blue .. the active layer.
.. enter an address "33606 N. 60th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85266" (no quotes, not case sensitive)
.. the map view zooms-in to the CC containing the location and shows the CC crosshatched.
.. view the demographic profile for this CC displayed in the lower left.
.. here you can examine many demographic subject matter items for that CC.
.. optionally click on other layers in the Legend Panel.

.. the address/location is shown by the blue marker
.. this is the CC associated with the address/location used in the searchbar.
.. see that the CC code is 0401017. See in the lower left panel the Census 2020 population was 43,515 for this CC.

.. Try a different address or location, maybe the ZIP code "85258" or any address/location.
.. The view will zoom to that CD and show CCs.
Examine Urban/Rural Patterns .. in the Legend Panel, left of map, click "Urban Layers" ckeckbox on.
.. click on an Urban Area in map to view its attributes in lower left panel.
.. hide this layer by unchecking the layer checkbox.
Examine Patterns of Economic Prosperity by Neighborhood/Census Tract .. in the Legend Panel, left of map, click "Tracts $MHI" ckeckbox on (scroll down).

The start-up view is Orange County, CA Congressional District 47.
This iVDA uses the beta version. See additional notes below iVDA mapping frame.

The iVDA beta version includes these additional operations (in development).
• Tools toolbar operations
  .. Layer editor .. operates on active layer; start by clicking Tools>Layer Editor
      - current version enables assigning and modifying a label associated with each shape in active layer.
  .. IP GeoLocation .. clicking this button zooms map view to your location based on IP address
      - generally accurate but not precise .. woring on improvement

• Query/Table operations .. start by clicking rightmost icon below map window (magnify with A icon)
  .. clicking that button opens the active layer table in a grid below map.
  .. illustrative query operations .. enter text (not case sensitive) in SQL edit box and click Query button.
      - stcd like '0401'
        .. show all reconds (CCs) having stcd (state-cd code) with value 0401
      - stcd like '0401' and gqn20>100
        .. show all reconds (CCs) in CD 0401 with 2020 group quarters greater than 100
      - GEOID LIKE '04%' and pop20>50000 .. illustrates using wildcard with AND operator
        .. show all reconds (CCs) in Arizona (04) with CC 2020 population of 50,000 or more

  .. show records in table in map
      - click "meet selected shape" button to zoom in map to this shape
      - click "meet all shapes" button to zoom in map to the set of shapes meeting query

  .. illustrative query operations .. using Congressional Districts layer
      - click Congressional Districts 118 layer name (makes active layer .. turns blue)
      - enter this query in SQL Filter edit box.
      - select stcd118,majmin where majmin>50 and stab='AZ'

Interactive Table Usage Notes

.. The above table is an interactive table. Use the buttons below the table to manage interactive operations.

Within the table itself, navigate up and down with vertical and horizontal scroll bars.
Use mouseover for expanded description of the subject matter header cells
Click a header cell to sort one direction, click again to sort the other direction.

The CD/CC code, left column, contains a 7 character code for the congressional district/congressional community. The leftmost 4 characters are the congressional district (CD) code. The CD code is the state FIPS code plus the CD code in that state. The rightmost 3 characters are the congressional community code (a unique sequence code in the corresponding CD). The CD/CC code is always seven characters, all numbers and contains no blanks.

How to save your CC or CD data ..
.. Copy row to clipboard. Click a row in the table and it turns blue. Right-click to copy that row to clipboard.
.. With a spreadsheet application open, click ctrl-V to paste those cells into the spreadsheet for further data use.

Find CD button. Key in CD code (4 characters, all numeric) then click Find CD.
.. e.g., 5108 for Virginia CD 08 .. see state codes in upper right state scroll list.
.. the table refreshes with CD row and all component CC rows.


Up to 5 CDs operation. Click this button to select only the CD codes in edit boxes. Always 4 characters.
