Examining Newspaper Publishing Industry Characteristics

May 2023 .. during the past year the number of newspaper publishing establishments increased by nearly 11 percent. The latest data show that the number of U.S. newspaper publishing establishments changed from 6,683 in 2021Q3 to 7,402 in 2022Q3, a change of 719 (10.7%). The newspaper publishing industry is morphing into a hybrid that includes Internet publishing.

This section is focused on using the Demographic-Economic Data Explorer (DEDE) and VDA GIS tools to access and analyze industry characteristics by type of business by county. The newspaper publishing industry is used as an example; the topics reviewed apply to any industry.

Patterns of Newspaper Publishers Establishments by County; 2022Q3
This view illustrates use of VDA Desktop GIS to display a thematic pattern map of the U.S. by county showing the number of newspaper publishers. Data from the QCEW 2022Q3 data in the GIS friendly format described below were merged into the Census-sourced U.S. by county shapefile. Explore the many other newspaper industry data can be related to/analyzed with other types of subject matter and geography.

This section is focused on using the Demographic-Economic Data Explorer (DEDE) to access and analyze industry characteristics by type of business by county. The newspaper publishing industry is used as an example but the topics reviewed here apply to any industry. The U.S. by county QCEW-based newspaper publishing establishments datasets, created using DEDE may be downloaded/viewed here for 2021Q3 (2017 NAICS code 51111) and here for 2022Q3 (2022 NAICS code 51311). These files are in dbase/dbf format that may be opened with Excel and other software. See more about these files/data below.

DEDE users can generate these and related files as further reviewed below -- for any NAICS industry by selected time period. The data may be downloaded using the QCEW data as the source or Census Bureau annual County Business Patterns (CBP). Differences, and advantages/disadvantages, of these sources are reviewed below.

Newspaper Publisher Industry Trends.. go to top
Starting with 22Q1, a U.S. by county newspaper publishing industry dataset is being updated quarterly. See the example for Orange County, CA; new quarterly data will be added as new fields. On June 7, 2023, the dataset will contain quarterly data 22Q1 through 22Q4 and 2022 annual. These data are maintained in a GIS friendly form and may be accesssed using VDA GIS tools with the CountyTrends GIS project. This framework enables geospatial analysis of newspaper publishing industry bu county attributes in context of other geographies and subject matter.

North American Industry Classification Scheme.. go to top
The newspaper publishing industry is defined based on the North American Industry Classification Scheme (NAICS). The NAICS coding is a standard, developed by OMB in consultation with Federal statistical agencies. NAICS is used Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. Data users must understand these codes and vintages to use data organized by NAICS codes. NAICS is updated every 5 years, creating most recently 2012, 2017 and 2022 vintage.

Newspaper Publishing Industry NAICS 2017 Code 51111
The newspaper publishing industry, as defined using the 2017 NAICS (type of business) comprises establishments known as newspaper publishers. This industry comprises establishments known as newspaper publishers. Establishments in this industry carry out operations necessary for producing and distributing newspapers, including gathering news; writing news columns, feature stories, and editorials; and selling and preparing advertisements. These establishments may publish newspapers in print or electronic form.
• Establishments publishing newspapers exclusively on the Internet are classified in Industry 519130, Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals;
• Establishments primarily engaged in printing newspapers without publishing are classified in Industry 32311, Printing;
• Establishments, such as trade associations, schools and universities, and social welfare organizations, that publish newsletters for distribution to their membership, but that are not commonly known as newspaper publishers, are classified according to their primary activity designation;
• Establishments primarily engaged in supplying the news media with information, such as news, reports, and pictures, are classified in Industry 519110, News Syndicates; and
• Establishments of independent representatives primarily engaged in selling advertising space are classified in Industry 541840, Media Representatives.

Newspaper Publishing Industry NAICS 2022 Code 51311
The newspaper publishing industry, as defined using the 2022 NAICS (type of business) comprises establishments known as newspaper publishers. This industry comprises establishments known as newspaper publishers. Establishments in this industry carry out operations necessary for producing and distributing newspapers, including gathering news; writing news columns, feature stories, and editorials; and selling and preparing advertisements. These establishments may publish newspapers in print or electronic form, including exclusively on the Internet.
• Establishments primarily engaged in printing newspapers without publishing are classified in Industry 32311, Printing;
• Establishments, such as trade associations, schools and universities, financial institutions, and social welfare organizations, that publish newsletters or newspapers for distribution to their membership, but that are not commonly known as newspaper publishers, are classified according to their primary activity;
• Establishments primarily engaged in streaming news without publishing are classified in Industry 516210, Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers;
• Establishments primarily engaged in supplying the news media with information, such as news, reports, and pictures, are classified in Industry 516210, Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers; and
• Establishments of independent representatives primarily engaged in selling advertising space are classified in Industry 541840, Media Representatives.

The NAICS definition for the newspaper publishing industry is functionally identical for the 2017 and 2022 vintages. NAICS codes, establishments included and titles are not the same for all types of business for different vintages.
