March 2024 .. There are 8,764 "Opportunity Zones" spread throughout the United States. These are areas, groups of census tracts, here new investments may be eligible for certain tax benefits. Related, HUBZones creates incentives (called "preferences") for federal agencies to purchase goods and services from businesses that operate and employ people in designated areas, also groups of census tracts. HUBZones (Historically Underutilized Business) are historically underdeveloped business areas that meets one or more of five defined criteria. These geographies are highly related but often included different census tracts.
By establishing areas that promote economic development, qualified entities can encourage and sustain business growth in their communities. Federal programs available to facilitate such investment and growth are the Opportunity Zones and HUBZones.

The following map illustrates how VDAGIS tools can be used to examine qualified areas in context CA CD 0646 in Orange County, CA. Congressional communities, such as Santa Ana, CA Center at pointer, can promote economic development in their area. The view can be easily augmented to shows block groups. Block group areas may be of interest to applicants and investors in understanding and documenting demographic-economic characteristics.

Below is a similar view for the Lansing, MI area (CD MI 07).

The HUBZone program creates incentives (called "preferences") for federal agencies to purchase goods and services from businesses that operate and employ people in areas designated as HUBZones. The acronym HUB stands for "Historically Underutilized Business," and a HUBZone is a historically underdeveloped business zone that meets one or more of five defined criteria. HUBZones are mainly areas that are Qualified Census Tracts.
