Creating Location-Based Shapefiles
Location-based, or point, shapefiles are often useful in Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to visually depict locations of clients, prospects, students or virtually any type of location in context of other geography. The point shapefile may be used with the Site Analysis tool to cherry-pick and/or select circular area sets of locations/points and create summary profiles. Use the GIS layer editor to place queries on points to view only those locations that meet selected SQL-like settings. This section reviews the CV XE GIS Create Point Shapefile (CPS) feature. The CPS feature enables the creation of a point shapefile using a CSV structured file that contains the latitude-longitude for each location (record) in the CSV file. It is common to have a CSV file that already contains the coordinates of a location. The CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file typically also contains a set of fields which provide descriptive attributes about the location. Point shapefiles may be used with any GIS software that can process shapefiles. Application Illustrating Use of the CPS Feature The following view shows schools as red markers in context of county geography and OpenStreetMaps base layer. The markers layer illustrates use of a point shapefile created using the CPS feature. Use of the identify tool is illustrated in the graphic; clicking on a marker displays a mini-profile showing attributes of that point/location.  Develop/Acquire the CSV Subject Matter File The CSV file shown in this scroll section contains a record for each of approximately 150 schools in Johnson County, KS. In this example, the latitude longitude coordinates are shown as the rightmost fields in each data record. These fields must exist and may appear anywhere in the record.

The data dictionary file is also a CSV file. The data dictionary CSV file contains a row/record for each field in the CSV subject matter file. The structure of each row/record in this file is the field name, field type (C/character or N/numeric), field width, and field decimal position (if any). The field name cannot include special characters or spaces, must not exceed 10 characters and cannot start with a number. A field named LATITUDE and a field named LONGITUDE must exist. As CPS starts, there are three prompts requiring information as described below. Prompt 1 -- Specify the New Shapefile to be Created Enter the full path and shapefile name as shown in the following example.  Prompt 2 -- Enter the CSV Data Dictionary File Name Enter the full path and data dictionary file name as shown in the following example.  The default file name is included with the CV XE installer. Prompt 3 -- Enter the CSV Subject Matter File Name Enter the full path and subject matter data file name as shown in the following example.  The default file name is included with the CV XE installer. Following Prompt 3, the processing begins. A message appears when the shapefile has been created. Optionally add the shapefile to the current project. Obtaining Latitude-Longitude Values There are many ways to obtain the latitude-longitude values associated with address data. One method is to use the APIGeocoder software or the CV XE GIS integrate geocoder. ProximityOne geocodes address data, adding the latitude-longitude to the existing address records. Many organizations developing location-based data include the latitude-longitude fields in the dataset.
