Population. The total population of the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 2,715,503 in 2010 to 2,808,175 in 2017, a change of 92,672 (3.4%). Among all metros, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA ranked 20th in 2017, based on total population. It ranked 37th based population change from 2010 to 2017 and ranked 310th based population percent change from 2010 to 2017. See section 1. for population projections to 2030 for the metro by county. See section 4. for additional details on population.

Geography. The total land area of the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA is 2,601.5 SqMi with water area of 503.6 SqMi. The metro ranked 176th among all metros based on total land area. With 2017 population density of 1,079.5, the metro ranked 15th among all metros (based on land area).

Geographic Mobility. The net migration of the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 8,349 in 2011 (6/30/10 to 7/1/11) to -870 in 2017. From 2011 through 2017, the total net migration was 24,334; the average annual net migration was 3,476. See section 4 for additional details on migration.

Housing. The total housing stock of the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 1,132,767 in 2010 to 1,160,684 in 2017, a change of 27,917 (2.5%). See section 5 for additional details on housing.

Cost of Living. The regional price parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 108.9 in 2010 to 107.2 in 2016. The RPP is an index where the national average of the cost of goods and services sold is 100. The RPP is an indicator of the cost of living in that area relative to the U.S. overall average. Personal Income. The total personal income of Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 131,895,780 ($000s) in 2010 to 160,064,642 ($000s) in 2016, a change of 28,168,862 ($000s) (21.4%). The per capita personal income changed from $48,568 in 2010 to $57,189 in 2016, a change of $8,621 (17.8%). See section 6.1. for additional details on personal income.

Gross Domestic Product. This metro ranked number 40 among the 383 MSAs based on 2017 per capita real GDP. The real per capita GDP changed from $56,359 in 2011 to $59,079 in 2017 a change of $2,720 (4.8%).

.. Current $ GDP The current dollar GDP changed from $158,154M in 2011 to $192,178M in 2017 a change of $34,024M ( 21.51%).

.. Quantity Index The all industry GDP quantity index changed from 104.453 in 2011 to 112.423 in 2017 a change of 7.970 ( 7.630%).

Employment Situation (updated monthly). The Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA labor force changed from 1,490,402 in November 2016 to 1,510,825 in November 2017, a change of 20,423 (1.4%). The unemployment rate changed from 4.09% in November 2016 to 4.08% in November 2017, a change of -0.01 (-0.18%). See section 6.7. for additional details on the employment situation.

Cities are places of population concentration. Incorporated cities have governmental powers assigned by the corresponding state. Metros, or CBSAs, contain one or more incorporated city. The Census Bureau develops annual estimates of the population for all cities using a model-based estimation procedure (in contrast to sample survey-based population estimates developed through the American Comunity Survey (ACS). The model based estimates developed for all cities time lag of only a little over a year. 6.8. Cost of Living go top

A cost of living measure is provided by the Regional Price Parity (RPP) for goods and services for an area (state or MSA). The RPP is developed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and updated annually. The RPP is an index where the national average of the cost of goods and services sold is 100. The RPP is a measure of the cost of living in that area relative to the U.S. overall average. The RPP is available for states and MSAs. The 2006-2016 series will be updated and extended to 2017 in May 2019. More detail is available in subscriber edition.

The Regional Price Parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD MSA changed from 108.9 in 2010 to 107.2 in 2017.
