Population. The total population of the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA changed from 202,159 in 2010 to 221,828 in 2018, a change of 19,669 (9.7%). Among all metros, Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA ranked 142th in 2018, based on total population. It ranked 201th based population change from 2010 to 2018 and ranked 107th based population percent change from 2010 to 2018. Geography. The total land area of the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA is 1,277.5 SqMi with water area of 7.2 SqMi. The metro ranked 367th among all metros based on total land area. With 2017 population density of 171.6, the metro ranked 218th among all metros (based on land area).
Geographic Mobility. The net migration of the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA changed from 1,534 in 2011 (6/30/10 to 7/1/11) to 303 in 2018. From 2011 through 2018, the total net migration was -1,231; the average annual net migration was -154. See section 4 for additional details on migration.
Housing. The total housing stock of the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA changed from 84,596 in 2010 to 89,458 in 2017, a change of 4,862 (5.8%). See section 5 for additional details on housing.
Cost of Living. The regional price parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA changed from 93.7 in 2010 to 92.1 in 2016. Gross Domestic Product. This metro ranked number 194 among the 383 MSAs based on 2017 per capita real GDP. The real per capita GDP changed from $41,512 in 2011 to $40,800 in 2017 a change of ($712) (-1.7%).

Employment Situation (updated monthly). The Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA labor force changed from 111,570 in November 2016 to 112,108 in November 2017, a change of 538 (0.5%). The unemployment rate changed from 3.47% in November 2016 to 3.12% in November 2017, a change of -0.35 (-10.02%). See section 6.7. for additional details on the employment situation.

The Census Bureau develops annual estimates of the population for all cities using a model-based estimation procedure (in contrast to sample survey-based population estimates developed through the American Comunity Survey (ACS). The model based estimates developed for all cities time lag of only a little over a year. In contrast, the ACS-based estimates for cities under 65,000 population have a time lag of four years and are estimates for a 5-year time period. For example, in January 2019, the 7/1/17 estimates are the most recent model-based population data for all cities, whereas the 2017 ACS estimates (centric to mid-2015) are the recent ACS-survey population estimates available for all cities.

A cost of living measure is provided by the Regional Price Parity (RPP) for goods and services for an area (state or MSA). The RPP is developed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and updated annually. The RPP is an index where the national average of the cost of goods and services sold is 100. The RPP is a measure of the cost of living in that area relative to the U.S. overall average. The RPP is available for states and MSAs. The 2006-2016 series will be updated and extended to 2017 in May 2019. More detail is available in subscriber edition.
The Regional Price Parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN MSA changed from 93.7 in 2010 to 92.1 in 2017.
