It is immediately clear, using the thematic map shown below, which metros have highest and lowest 2012 per capita real Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This section is focused on use of GIS resources for visual and geospatial analysis of Gross Domestic Product and related measures by metropolitan statistical area.

Metro GDP related sections:
  • Metros main section
  • Main metro GDP section: access selected GDP items via interactive table.
  • Metro GDP & GIS: tools and resources for GDP thematic mapping and geospatial analysis.
  • Metro GDP by industry: tools and analysis of metro GDP by industry.
  • Metro GDP ICT Sector: Information and Communications Technologies.
  • 2013 metro designations: Core-Based Statistical Areas and county components.

GDP by metropolitan area is the sub-state counterpart of the Nation's gross domestic product (GDP), the most comprehensive measure of U.S. economic activity. GDP by metropolitan area is derived as the sum of the GDP originating in all the industries in the metropolitan area. More about GDP. Data are for 2013 vintage Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and based on estimates developed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). ProximityOne develops estimates of GDP industry level detail not provided by BEA, prepares custom model-based GDP component projections and conducts market potential analyses using GDP data.

Selected MSA GDP and demographic data have been integrated into the 2013 MSA shapefile. Subject matter fields included in the shapefiles are described below. The following view illustrates use of the shapefile to display thematic patterns of 2012 per capita real GDP by MSA.

Per Capita Real Gross Domestic Product (2012) by Metropolitan Statistical Area (2013)

Real GDP by metropolitan area is an inflation-adjusted measure of each area's gross product based on national prices for the goods and services produced within the metropolitan area.

Steps to Develop the Above Map and Variations (requires Windows computer with Internet connection)
1. Install the ProximityOne CV XE GIS
... run the CV XE GIS installer
... take all defaults during installation
2. Download the MetroGDP shapefile with integrated codes, names and demographic-economic data
... expand the downloaded zip file (details provided separately) to the folder c:\cvxe\1
... it is important the shapefile be expanded to the folder c:\cvxe\1 as other files are required for the project that are located in that folder
3. Open the METROGDP1.GIS project
... after completing the above steps, click File>Open>Dialog
... open the file named c:\cvxe\1\metrogdp1.gis
4. Done. The map view shown above should appear.

Using the MetroGDP Shapefile
The CBSA shapefile includes all U.S. CBSAs -- Micropolitan Statistical Areas (MISAs)and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Numeric subject matter fields are zero for MISAs. The start-up view of this shapefile in the METROGDP1.GIS project uses a query on this layer so that only MSAs are visible. The query could be chnaged so that all CBSAs are shown, optionally with labels.
