Population. The total population of the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 252,996 in 2010 to 286,419 in 2018, a change of 33,423 (13.2%). Among all metros, Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA ranked 95th in 2018, based on total population. It ranked 171th based population change from 2010 to 2018 and ranked 60th based population percent change from 2010 to 2018. See section 1. for population projections to 2030 for the metro by county. Geography. The total land area of the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA is 722.5 SqMi with water area of 51.6 SqMi. The metro ranked 607th among all metros based on total land area. With 2017 population density of 388.4, the metro ranked 76th among all metros (based on land area).
Geographic Mobility. The net migration of the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 2,217 in 2011 (6/30/10 to 7/1/11) to 5,190 in 2018. From 2011 through 2018, the total net migration was 2,973; the average annual net migration was 372. See section 4 for additional details on migration.
Housing. The total housing stock of the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 108,496 in 2010 to 116,820 in 2017, a change of 8,324 (7.7%). See section 5 for additional details on housing.
Cost of Living. The regional price parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 104.7 in 2010 to 106.9 in 2016. The RPP is an index where the national average of the cost of goods and services sold is 100. The RPP is an indicator of the cost of living in that area relative to the U.S. overall average. Personal Income. The total personal income of Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 10,228 $M in 2010 to 13,705 $M in 2017, a change of 3,477 $M (34.0%). Gross Domestic Product. This metro ranked number 231 among the 383 MSAs based on 2017 per capita real GDP. The real per capita GDP changed from $36,080 in 2011 to $37,966 in 2017 a change of $1,886 (5.2%).

Employment Situation (updated monthly). The Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA labor force changed from 133,491 in November 2016 to 138,426 in November 2017, a change of 4,935 (3.7%). The unemployment rate changed from 5.38% in November 2016 to 4.37% in November 2017, a change of -1.01 (-18.75%). See section 6.7. for additional details on the employment situation.

Cities are places of population concentration. Incorporated cities have governmental powers assigned by the corresponding state. Metros, or CBSAs, contain one or more incorporated city. The Census Bureau develops annual estimates of the population for all cities using a model-based estimation procedure (in contrast to sample survey-based population estimates developed through the American Comunity Survey (ACS). The model based estimates developed for all cities time lag of only a little over a year. In contrast, the ACS-based estimates for cities under 65,000 population have a time lag of four years and are estimates for a 5-year time period. 6.8. Cost of Living go top
A cost of living measure is provided by the Regional Price Parity (RPP) for goods and services for an area (state or MSA). The RPP is developed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and updated annually. The RPP is an index where the national average of the cost of goods and services sold is 100. The RPP is a measure of the cost of living in that area relative to the U.S. overall average. The RPP is available for states and MSAs. The 2006-2016 series will be updated and extended to 2017 in May 2019. More detail is available in subscriber edition.
The Regional Price Parity (RPP) for all goods and services for the Olympia-Tumwater, WA MSA changed from 104.7 in 2010 to 106.9 in 2017.
