The ProximityOne Regional Demographic Economic Modeling System (RDEMS) integrates demographic, economic, business and other data for wide-ranging analysis. Updated continuously, the data are integrated into a cause and effect modeling system. RDEMS output is available as a set of estimates and projections. RDEMS is also available as a service with integrated Modeler software, underlying historical data and model structures. RDEMS users may set their own assumptions and develop alternative estimates and projections, examine what-if scenarios and perform impact analyses.

RDEMS Structure
The Regional Demographic Economic Modeling System (RDEMS) integrates wide-ranging demographic-economic data. Updated continuously, the data are used in a cause and effect modeling system. RDEMS output is available as a set of estimates and projections. RDEMS is also available as a service with integrated Modeler software, underlying historical data and model structures.

The overall RDEMS model blends several components that include:
1. population estimates and projections developed using a modified age-cohort method.
2. personal income by major sources
3. establishments and labor force
4. population, households and housing
These components included interconnected cause and effect relationships/equations.
"Personal income by major sector and employment/earnings at the 2 digit level"
-- annual -- US, state, metro, all counties; 2011 forward
-- quarterly -- US, state, metro, all counties; 2013 forward
-- advance & quarterly version of REIS; uses QCEW
"Population, Households & Housing"
-- annual, synched with annual above -- US, state, metro, county, tract; 2010 forward
-- even though this has drill down to tract; many will not use tract level detail.
-- see scope of subject matter

A more in-depth description of the model structure and methodology are available.

Web Data Access
The RDEMS software is a Windows based application used to develop estimates and projections, produce reports and tables and to perform impact analysis operations. The Web-based interactive tool for accessing projections becomes available in fall 2016. Use Web-based tables described below to examine RDEMS database attributes for selected areas.

Using Web-based Tables
When a geographic area is selected an RDEMS table opened. The table is displayed showing the geographic area name, two selection scroll sections and data table.

Example: View Harris County, TX
  • the CA30 Economic Profile opens by default.
  • select a different table for this same geographic area using the left scroll section.
  • select a different geographic area using the right scroll section.

Web Table Availability
These tables
  • provide current/historical data
  • illustrate scope of subject matter available as current estimates and projections
      - "current estimates" are as of 2016
      - "projections" refer to data for future periods (for annual data 2017 through 2021 as of 2016)

Briefing Notes -- narrative summary of selected demographic-economic items
  • most data are selected from more detailed tables described below
  • most data are presented in comparison with corresponding U.S. data
POP1 Population & Components of Change, Age & Race/Origin
  • most recent Census sourced FSCP annual estimates (lags one year+)
HSG1 Housing Characteristics
  • most recent Census sourced FSCP annual estimates (lags one year+)
  • most recent Census sourced building permits annual data (lags one year)
DEM1 Demographic-Economic Profile
  • items from ACS 1-year demographic-economic profile interactive tables
  • lag up to 2 years
  • includes only those items for which current estimates and projections are developed
  • web tables available for only those areas with 65,000 population or more
LF1 Labor Force Characteristics
  • a repeat of corresponding part of DEM1 for convenience comparing to LF2
LF2 Labor Force Characteristics

Additional Usage Notes
1. Labor Force Measures
Compare the LF1 (Census-ACS) to LF2 (BLS-LAUS) Labor Force measures in the Harris County, TX spreadsheet
Note the 2014 ACS unemployment estimate is 140,923 compared to the 2014 LAUS estimate of 110,986.
  • the numbers are substantially differ, which one to use?
  • there is no way to determine the reliability of the LAUS estimate due to estimation procedure.
.. an observation, not a criticism.
  • due estimation methodology, it is possible to determine the reliability of the ACS estimate.
  • one advantage of the LAUS estimate is that more recent data are available compared to ACS.
  • another LAUS usage advantage is that the estimates are released monthly with a very short lag.
  • another LAUS usage advantage is that the estimates are available for each/all counties.
.. the ACS 1-year estimates (as used here) are available only for areas with population 65,000 or more.
  • an ACS usage advantage is that related attributes about the population are also available, unlike the LAUS data.
  • in summary both estimates, and related data, need to be examined.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why are these data needed?
A: There are many application/analytical scenarios that need to be described in a case-by-case manner.
In general, these data are needed as Federal statistical agencies do not produce current estimates nor projections, but yet are essential to meet planning and business needs.
For example ND counties with oil shale boom still show high population gains as of 2015, the most recent Census sourced data; the economy is changing there; out-migration is increasing, etc.

Q: How can these data be used?
A1: To reduce uncertainty and risk associated with management, policy-making and decision-making.
A2: To improve profitability and goal/objective achievement in the most expedient and cost-effective manner.
A3: There is a near infinite set of answers to this question, based on the sphere of subject matter interest.

Q: How often are the data updated?
A: The data are updated quarterly. Updates are released in July, October, January, April.

Q: What is an update?
A: An update involves re-estimation of the model using new/latest assumptions and new/revised historical data.
.. historical data in the database are updated.
.. revised current estimates and projections are updated in the database.
.. for the quarterly projections, the extent of the quarterly projection is advanced each quarter.
.. for the annual projections, the extent of the annual projection is extended each year with the July release.

Q: What are the data updated quarterly? Aren't annual updates adequate?
A1 Different historical data update at different times during the year.
.. for example, the ACS data update in September of each year.
  - these data need to be reflected in the current estimates and projections in the 4th quarter release, without waiting for July of the next year.
A2 Many subject matter items are very time sensitive;
.. annual updates are useful but do not adequately capture key trends and changes.
.. for example, the monthly and quarterly changes in the employment situation and housing conditions require more recent data for program management, policy-making and decision-making.
A3 Changing conditions may necessitate changes and model specification.
.. for example, a change to the Fed interest rate, change in the oil supply due to cartel action, etc. may be so fundamental that existing projections need to be modified without waiting for an annual update.

Q: What is meant by the terms "current estimates and projections"?
A1. Current estimates are data values associated with item(s) (e.g., total population) for the current time period.
Projections are data values associated with items(s) (e.g, unemployment rate) for future points in time.
Reference to "current estimates" is to distinguish from "most recent estimates".
- as of June 2016, the "most recent estimate" from ACS 2014 (the most recent ACS data) is as of 2014.
- those data are two years old and not "current estimates".
A2. "RDEMS estimates and projections" refers to a continuous series of values for subject matter item(s).
.. the RDEMS series for the "County SYOA" data are annual and run continuously for the period 2010-2060.

Q: How are the models specified? How is the scope and mix of data determined?
A1. The models are a set of cause and effect equations used to specify the jointly dependent/simultaneous determination of geographic, demographic, economic and business data.
.. the exact specification of the models is licensed to users who wish to:
1. develop extended detail (geographic or subject matter projections.
2. alternative scenario projections based on different assumptions.
3. assess impact of change using additional or differently specified equations or data.
A2. The scope and mix of data is determined by factors including:
1. subject matter needed to develop single year of age estimates and projections.
2. subject matter needed to estimate GDP and personal income models.
3. subject matter needed to estimate/project key demographic-economic items determined by Warren Glimpse.
4. need for the items in the cause and effect equations (to take account of all relevant factors)
5. limitations imposed by unavailability of some items

Q: Can I integrate my data with RDEMS estimates and projections?
A1 Yes. Subscribers may download/export data for use on their computer.
.. Downloaded/exported data are organized as described in associated documentation/file layout.
.. A standardized data structure is used that enabled importing RDEMS into wide-ranging software.
