GeoStatistical Equivalence Files
-- relating one type of geography to another
This section summarizes and provides access to data files that enable equivalencing of one type of geography to another. For example, the 2020 vintage Census TIGER shapefiles include these shapefiles (among many others):
- 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) polygon shapefiles.
- 2020 Census tract polygon shapefiles.
Some applications require knowing what part (area) of ZCTA(s) intersect with what part (area) of tracts.

From the map view alone, it cannot be determined how many square meters of census tract 04013216835 intersect with ZIP Code area 85268 nor what portion of that intersecting area is of the total area of ZIP Code 85268. An equivalence file is needed.

The 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) to County (COUNTY) equivalence file provides a list of unique relationships between the 2020 ZCTAs and 2020 COUNTIEs. Each record in the file represents one relationship that is formed when a 2020 ZCTA intersects a 2020 COUNTY. This file represents intersections of geography only. Counties cover the entire nation and are all represented in this file. In situations where there is a COUNTY, but no ZCTA exists, the ZCTA values are not populated.
