Geography of Unequal Recovery .. goto top
The New York Times Geography of Unequal Recovery story chronicles U.S. counties with the biggest job gains and losses .. percentage change in jobs from 2019 to 2023. The good news about this story is that it gives visibility to the BLS Quarterly Census of Wages & Employment (QCEW) program and data. Yet the terminology, concepts and findings leave an opening for improvement and different conclusions. Left to a footnote, the most notable thing about the QCEW data is that these data uniquely provide employment by type of business and related data for all U.S. counties as a continuous quarterly time series. The data are for a quarter with only a six month lag. Yet, these are employmnet data, not jobs data. And for all their highly useful data, as conveyed in the story, there are major gaps in coverage of government employment. Largely, employment in the Gig economy are not inlcuded in the QCEW program. As noted, the population data referenced in the story use ACS 2020 5-year estimates (centric to prepandemic 2020) whereas 2023 Census-sourced model-based esimates might be a better choice. Those interested in accessing using the QCEW time series data can use the ProximityOne Demographic-Economic Data Explorer ( DEDE) to build and analyze their own GIS friendly datasets.
