Urban Areas are a statistical geography defined by the Census Bureau. The 2,613 "2020 Census Urban Areas" are comprised of sets of urban census blocks. Urban areas are important because they reflect geographic concentrations of economic activity, providing a hub for jobs, innovation, education, and diverse social interactions, often leading to higher standards of living through improved access to healthcare, infrastructure, and public services, while also driving significant portions of a nation's GDP. Use the VDAGIS tools to create maps, like the one shown below, using any of the items in the table for any area. The graphic below shows how the population of largest 2020 Urban Areas (UAs) have changed since Census 2020. Circular markers in the graphic shown below represent the lergest (ACS 2023 1-year estimates) UAs located in the lower 48 states. Marker colors, as shown in the legend, show the percent population change 2020-2023 by UA.
