This section provides access to data and tools to examine these data for all ZIP code area in the U.S. This annual update includes characteristics for approximately 33,000 ZIP code areas based on ACS 2016 data. ZIP Code Area Characteristics -- goto top
ZIP code geography used in this section is based on the Census 2010 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. New demographic -economic estimates are developed annually from the American Community Survey. The most recent estimates are based on the ACS 2016 5 year estimates. Using the ACS 2016 estimates, these areas ranged in population from 0 to 115,104 (60629, Cook County, IL). 320 ZIP Code Areas had zero population; 1,599 had population under 100. The average ZIP Code Area population was 9,696. Based on the ACS 2016 5 year estimates, the U.S. median household income was $55,322 and $57,617 based on the ACS 2016 1 year estimates.

Demographic-Economic-Business Profiles & Analyses
ProximityOne develops demographic-economic profiles and analyses for individual ZIP codes and groups of ZIP codes. The following table presents a list of profiles for selected ZIP codes. These ZIP codes have been selected to provide a range of state examples; higher median household income ZIP codes were selected in that state which also had a population near or above the U.S. average. Click the ZIP code link in the table shown below to view illustrative profiles.

Each ZIP code profile shows all subject matter items presented in the ZIP code interactive tables (below and related sections) plus other demographic, economic and business data. The ZIP business patterns data (section 3 in each report) include establishments by 3-digit NAICS/type of business code and full detail 6-digit NAICS for the Health Services sector. Importance of Demographic-Economic Data
The importance of understanding the demographic-economic make-up and trends can hardly be overstated. Community and educational challenges and opportunities are shaped by demographic-economic dynamics. Only by knowing "where we are" can we develop the most effective plans for improvement.

The American Community Survey provides "richer" demographic-economic characteristics for national scope wide-ranging geographic areas. While Census 2010 provides data similar to those items in the General Demographics section, only ACS sourced data provide details on topics such as income and poverty, labor force and employment, housing value and costs, educational participation and attainment, language spoken at home, among many related items. The approximate 600 items accessible via the dataset are supplemented by a wide range of additional subject matter. These data are updated annually in December of each year for each/all political/statistical areas, including school districts, census tracts, ZIP code areas and block groups.
