December 16, 2024 .. topic of the week .. housing cost burden analytics by block group .. over 21 million renter households spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs in 2023, representing nearly half (49.7%) of the 42.5 million renter households in the U.S. for whom rent burden is calculated. The U.S. median ratio of housing costs-to-income renters remained unchanged from 2022 at 31%. Over 21 million renter households spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs in 2023, representing nearly half (49.7%) of the 42.5 million renter households in the U.S. for whom rent burden is calculated. The U.S. median ratio of housing costs-to-income for renters remained unchanged from 2022 at 31%, Examine housing cost burden at the block group level using the new (12/12/24) 2023 American Community Survey 5-year estimates (ASC2023).

Geographic patterns of housing cost burden (where ratio of housing costs-to-income exceeds 30%) are often masked when using larger geographics such as counties or metros. The following graphic was developed using VDAGIS Tools

To develop the above graphic, the Demographic-Economic Data Explorer DEDE was used to create a housing analytics dataset from the ACS2023 summary file. Data items extracted (the DEDE "subject matter items file") are listed below. These are the available fields (which could be expanded) contained in the VDAGIS project layer/shapefile "cb_2023_us_bg_500k_acs23.shp".
