December 30, 2024 .. topic of the week .. assessing the impact of U.S. net international migration .. the Census Bureau-sourced model-based U.S. population estimate reached 340.1 million as of July 1, 2024, largely as the result of a large net international migration (IntMig). It is unlikely that this level of IntMig will be maintained into the future. What will be the impact of changing births, deaths and migration in the years ahead? Read more ...

Assessing the Impact of U.S. Net International Migration .. goto top
The Census Bureau-sourced model-based U.S. population estimate reached 340.1 million as of July 1, 2024, largely as the result of a large net international migration (IntMig). THe U.S. net international migration is the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants into the U.S. It is unlikely that this level of IntMig will be maintained into the future. What will be the impact of changing births, deaths and migration in the years ahead?

The IntMig 2024 (7/1/24 to 6/30/25) shows the unusually high estimate of 2,786,119 compared to the 376,004 ImgMig 2021 (7/1/20 to 6/30/21) and elsewhere historically. These data are based on the Census Bureau model-based vintage 2024 population and components of change estimates released in December 2024. Learn more.

The IntMig 2025 and succeeding years are expected to be dramatically lower. The decreased IntMig, along with other factors, could result in a decreasing U.S. population as early as 2030 and in adverse socioeconomic conditions affecting states in a disproportionate manner. The impacts might manifest themselves in ways such as reduced tax revenue, decreased employment in agricultural and service industries, decreased household consumption among other ways.

Patterns of 2024 Net International Migration by State
The graphic below shows patterns of 2024 net international migration (IntMig24) labeled with IntMig24 by state. The graphic provides insights into which states might be most significantly impacted by a sharply decreasing IntMig in years ahead. Use the iVDA interactive mapping to map & geospatially examine state population trends

Patterns of U.S. Population and Components of Change, 2020-2030
The graphic below shows patterns of population components of change and the potential impact of decreasing net international migration (IntMig) between 2020 and 2024. In this illustrative scenario shows the impact of a decreased IntMig at the level of 500,000 starting in the period 7/1/24 to 6/30/25. Data for the years 2020 to 2024 are based on the Census model-based estimates. This scenario, with declining births, increasing deaths and a decreased IntMig can result in the U.S. population decreasing from 2029 to 2030. Click graphic for larger view.

Notes.
Population and components of change estimates/counts are based on residents and do not differentiate between citizens, documented and undocumented population.

Population Components of Change
The population in period t (P[t]) for an area is defined using the identity:
P[t]:=P[t-1]+B[t]-D[t]+IM[t]+DM[t], where:
- P[t] -- resident population as of 7/1/t
- P[t-1] -- resident population as of 7/1/t
- B[t] -- births during the period 7/1/t-1 to 6/30/t
- D[t] -- deaths during the period 7/1/t-1 to 6/30/t
- IM[t] -- net international migration during the period 7/1/t-1 to 6/30/t
- DM[t] -- net domestic during the period 7/1/t-1 to 6/30/t

B, D, IM and DM are the components of change.
Birth and death data are normally provided by the National Census for Health Statistics (NCHS). At the time this summary was developed, NCHS has not reported birth and death data for 7/1/22-6/30/23 or 7/1/23-6/30/24. The Census Bureau derives those data in part from states participating in the Census Bureau Federal State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates (FSCPE).

Births for the period 2025 through 2030 are based on the assumption that the birth rate will continue to decrease through 2030.

Deaths for the period 2025 through 2030 are dased on the assumption that the number of deaths will increase due to the size of the population 65 years and over increasing through 2030.

Net domestic migration for the U.S. nets to zero. State to state domestic migration impacts individual states but not the total U.S. population.

Net international migration is the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants into the U.S. The net international migration projections for the period 2025 through 2030 are based on the composite of two primary events.
1. the immigration through the southern border will decrease precipitously. This immigration component is already being manifested in decreases for the period 7/1/24 to the current date. It is projected that annual southern border net international migration will be on par with the 7/1/21 to 6/30/22.
2. the 2025-2029 U.S. administration has announced deportation plans starting in early 2025. While the magnitude of the deportation process is not known, it has been announced that the deportations (forced emigration) will be more than 1.3 million population.

For the illustrative scenario shown above, the annual net international migration is set at 500,000 reflecting the two above developments.
